Play and communication are critical elements in a child’s development. Even when a child’s communication development is unconventional, play helps the child understand the world, their feelings and their relationships. This presentation will share the journey of a 3-year-old boy(M) who receives private speech and OT therapy( using a developmental communication model as well as being informed by the DIR/FT model). The collaboration with his school based early childhood program and his IEP goals will be highlighted as they relate to understanding how play, unconventional language and social communication can be integrated into M’s daily time at school. Video examples will be provided to enhance the presentation.
