Reflecting on experiences leading parent groups in a DIR model school, this presentation will first examine common themes that emerge across individuals’ experiences as parents of children with autism and will then explore the positive impacts of participating in a parent group. Using case studies and comparing how parents tell their stories, this session will demonstrate how the shared group experience can promote anxiety reduction and improve trust for parents raising children with autism. Discussion will emphasize narrative construction as a unique process reflective of parent-child relationships, individual profile and development.
