“How do you know what you are feeling? First, identify sensations!”: Interoception – The Eighth Sensory System

Ira Glovinsky, PhD and Kelly Mahler, OTD, OTR/L

Description
Profectum is pleased to invite you to this “cutting edge” Master Class on how identifying sensations from inside of the body is an essential pathway to identifying feelings and self-regulation.  The interoceptive system, long known as the physiological state of the body and recognized as the eighth sensory system, underlies the ability to attend to and identify the body signals and level of arousal we are experiencing that lead to actions to address feelings and emotions, evidenced in behavior and/or representation of “self”.

In this Master Class clinician and researcher Ira Glovinsky, a psychologist, and Kelly Mahler, an occupational therapist, will present a paradigm shift in our work with children in preventive and intervention treatments. Using the interoceptive system as a window into the development of “self”, the embodiment of emotions, and the assessment of interoceptive disorders will reveal its function in self-regulation. They will teach us why and how interoception underlies the development and expression of emotions so essential for mental health. They will also discuss the impact of interoception on DIR’s functional emotional developmental capacities, and how the focus on interoception relates to other individual differences and supports developmental progress. Extensive case material will illustrate the impact of interoception on emotional and developmental competence, challenges and psychopathology.
