Kinesthetic Empathy as a Treatment Modality
Some have argued that Autistic children struggle to understand the meaning and intent of movement and action. This may well be true in the reverse —neurotypical practitioners likely struggle to understand Autistic movement. In this masterclass, Deborah Brandt will discuss the utility of kinesthetic empathy, a tool that can help us to create connection and synchrony through the most rudimentary movements and actions. This model is helpful for all practitioners looking to connect with their clients more simply and more deeply. Together we will learn how to use kinesthetic empathy to inform our psychomotor behavior and move with our clients.
Learning Objectives
- Be able to discuss the differences between the proprioceptive and kinesthetic senses and kinesthetic empathy.
- Be able to identify and describe the experience of kinesthetic empathy when you are watching someone else move.
- Be able to discuss how you would use that experience with an actual or hypothetical client.
