Supporting the Anxious Eater: A Responsive Approach
This course will give professionals a new way to conceptualize the support of children who have individual differences that cause them to struggle to participate in family mealtimes and enjoy eating. Instructor Karen Dilfer approaches this topic through the lens of responsive feeding and discusses the importance of the parent-child relationship as it relates to feeding development. Case studies and video examples will illustrate how to establish sensory and emotional safety for children at mealtimes and how to support parents to create pressure-free mealtimes. Reflective problem-solving and collaboration will help learners to apply principles presented in practical ways to build clinical reasoning.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will gain an understanding of responsive feeding principles and demonstrate how to apply them to support children whose individual differences make it difficult for them to enjoy eating.
- Explain how sensory safety and emotional safety are the foundation for building a child’s internal motivation to eat.
- Learn to collaborate with parents to give them increased confidence feeding their child.
